While in New Zealand, you have to take the opportunity to try some traditional, Maori style food, and the Maori Kitchen is the place to do it.
- Located in downtown Auckland, the Maori Kitchen aims to preserve the ancient Maori cooking traditions, allowing visitors to taste, smell and experience the history and cuisine first-hand.
- Master chef Rewi Spraggon helps guests understand the Maori culture through experiencing local, indigenous food, using a style of cooking known as Hāngi.
- Hāngi is the oldest cooking process in New Zealand, introduced by Polynesian ancestors.
- Many of the rocks in the pit have been passed down through Rewi’s family, making cooking a very special experience for him.
- Rocks are heated in the pit to around 700 degrees Celsius. The food is put into baskets and lined with leaves, with the meat on the bottom and veggies on top.
- Kumara, New Zealand’s sweet potato, was brought over from Polynesia.
- The pork belly burger is one of the best burgers you could ever hope to have.
- The Maori Kitchen offers an authentic indigenous experience, and is open 7 days a week.
