There are a number of producers entering the Perth Royal Food Awards this to try and take out the title of the best in the West, and Theo visits one of their winning producers.
- Who doesn’t love cheese, here at Cambray Cheese in Nannup they are using sheeps milk to make award-winning cheeses.
- The Wildes who own the operation at Cambray Cheese have 500 sheep on their property and they believe that happy sheep are the key to their success.
- Milking the sheep is the first step in the cheese making process and at its peak the dairy harvests around 300L a day, though currently it is down around 8 as their priority is the lambs, which makes products even better when you can see how the animals are cared for.
- Cambray Cheese is a farmhouse cheese maker, coming from the European Status of where the farm makes cheese from milk collected on their property. So they have complete control over the product.
- The farm specialises in sheep milk as it is a lot healthier for you and easier to digest, including containing more calcium and minerals and they believe it gives an overall better product.
- Chambray Cheese has been very lucky over the years bring home a number of awards including winning Champion Cheese and Champion Dairy product at this years Perth Royal Food Awards.
- Cambray Cheese won awards for its Farmhouse Gold Cheese, and producing around 10 tonnes of cheese a year, including some using local cow’s milk.
- There was an array of different cheeses judged for this year’s Perth Royal Food awards and the prestigious title of the best cheese in WA is only possible thanks to the brilliant work done by The Royal Agricultural Society of WA, a not for profit organisation that drives the Perth Royal Food Awards, helping us all identify the best in the west.
