Story Title: Strangford Lough: oysters, cheese and bread with Tracey Jeffreys
TX Date: 14th October 2018
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Tracy Jeffreys’ food tour takes you all around Northern Ireland’s County Down to meet some fantastic local producers and taste some award-winning food and drink.

  • Fist visited is Strangford Lough a sea lough created by ancient glaciers carving the landscape. Its unique position along the edge of ocean allows for an incredible maritime environment. The towns around the loch, once fishing villages, are now set up for tourists, allowing you access to the spectacular scenery of the region. The area hosts a wide range of food options, with the seafood especially being particularly delicious.
  • A local oyster farmer, Patrice regularly takes out visitors to see how oysters are harvested. The tour heads out on low tide, allowing visitors a unique insight to the environment and the work required to nurture the delicacies.
  • Next Tracey invites you to her home – an 18th century thatched cottage on the stunning shores of Strangford Lough in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Starting with tea, coffee and a selection of Tray bakes and some of Tracey’s famous fruit soda breads freshly baked that morning, served with hand churned local butter including dulse {seaweed} and salt butter.
You also have the option of participating in making traditional Irish bread– soda bread farls, champ bread {potato with scallions and wheaten {brown} bread.
  • And last in our stops is City Cheese, the only organic certified cheesemaker in Northern Ireland. Their goats cheese in particular, made with raw milk, is an absolute sensation. These cheeses are completely unique, with rich, creamy and even fruity tastes
