Giapo Ice Cream

Segment: Giapo Ice Cream
Episode: Auckland
Air Date: 15th February 2019
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Auckland’s Giapo Ice Cream has transformed eating the sweet treat into an immersive experience.

  • Started 11 years ago by the husband and wife team of Giapo and Annarosa Grazioli, the desserts served here don’t comply with the traditionally understood meaning of ice cream.
  • The creations served here are pushing the boundaries of what gelato can be, with each creation being a photogenic work of art.
  • Giapo and Annarosa knew they wanted to change more than the flavours of ice cream, seeing it as something that could be more expressive – they wanted a way to stand out.
  • Wearable ice cream was developed when Giapo and Annarosa were looking for a different way to hold the ice cream. This has been a hugely popular option.
  • At the heart of Giapo is the idea that ingenuity and imagination can be applied to ice cream to change its function.
  • Giapo is possibly the only ice cream store with a dedicated Innovation Area for testing ideas – the walls are covered with drawings and designs, there is a 3D printer and molds of their most successful ideas.
  • The Colossus Squid was formed when they decided to make something of a monstrosity. A prototype was made, and it was added to the menu.
  • The motto here is that “Art Will Change the World”, and it’s hard to argue with that.
