Russell Farms Strawberries

Title: Russell Farms Strawberries.
Broadcast: Episode 9, 2nd August, 2018
Presenter: Scott Taylor

A short drive south of the city is Russell Farms, and Scott is there today to see how they are growing the tastiest strawberries

  • Many growers these sacrifice flavour and taste for higher yields, though not here at Russell Farms where freshness and flavour reigns supreme.
  • The location of the farm is key to the taste of its produce. Located right next to the Jandakot water reserve, means they have access to Perth’s best quality water and loads of free draining soil.
  • Russell Farms is family business, and they have a huge passion for growing strawberries that taste just like they did 30 years ago.
  • Two different varieties are grown on the farm, the Camarosa and the festival. The Camarosa is firmer in texture, a flat bottom and a big bold flavour, with the festival being more delicate and sweet. However come Summer, the Camarosa really comes into its own.
  • The strawberries are grown in little tunnels that act as a hot house, the soil is beautiful and rich, and the high-quality compost has a liner to it that deters the pests.
  • The strawberries are subject to stringent taste tests, yes that’s right it is someone’s job to taste the strawberries!
  • The strawberries are currently in season right till the end of summer and are available at two locations, Thomas Road in Anketell and on Russell road in Munster.
